Workshop on “Forest Fire Risks in Armenia Due to Climate Change and Relevant Mitigation Measures” (15/11/10)
The workshop on “Forest Fire Risks in Armenia Due to Climate Change and Relevant Mitigation Measures” took place on 15 November 2010, in the scope of the “Adaptation to Climate Change Impacts in Mountain Forest Ecosystems of Armenia” UNDP/GEF Project. The workshop aimed at discussion of forest fire management related issues in Armenia, presentation of relevant best available and applicable international practices as well as further development and implementation of measures under the Project to mitigate elevated forest fire risk in Syunik due to climate change and climate variability. The representatives of government stakeholders, partner and international organisations participated in the discussion. Forest fire management practices from Central European and Mediterranean region were brought to attention of participants by Mr. Nikola Nikolov, Forest Fire Management International Expert under the project. The presented techniques and models of forest fire management system were especially interesting for the participants from the perspective of its applicability in Armenia. Armenia’s experience in the relevant field was also presented in the workshop. Wrapping up the workshop participants once more emphasized the significance of the discussion taken place, its results as well as stated comments and suggestions to be taken into consideration during the project implementation process.
