NAMA Regional Workshop for Eastern European and Asia-Pacific Regions
The UNFCCC Secretariat in cooperation with the RA Ministry of Nature Protection organized a regional workshop in Yerevan city on July 2-4, 2012.
The workshop was devoted to the exchange of experience and lessons learned in preparation and implementation of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) (greenhouse gases emission reduction) for the Eastern European and Asia-Pacific regions.
The regional workshop for the Eastern European and Asia-Pacific regions on preparation and implementation of NAMA was attended by the representatives from 33 countries and 11 international organizations. Totally 73 participants, including the representatives from different governmental institutions of Armenia and international organizations, attended the workshop.
The welcome remarks of the event were done by Mr.Aram Harutyunyan, Minister of Nature Protection of Armenia and by Ms.Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP resident representative.
During the workshop the diversity of NAMAs was discussed and presented to the participants. This was followed by the country presentations on their NAMAs support programs.
The representatives from Armenia, Maldives, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Cambodia and Moldova made relevant presentations.
On the first working day the UNDP representative Mr Francisko Avendano made a presentation devoted to the best practice of institutional arrangements for NAMAs. This was followed by a group exercise during which the participants identified the best practice of institutional arrangements to develop and successfully implement NAMAs.
During the next days of the workshop the presentations were made on sector specific NAMAs and use of the Technology Needs Assessment to develop and implement NAMAs. A specific part of the workshop was devoted to the international support to develop and implement NAMAs. from multi-lateral and bi-lateral organizations. The representatives from UNDP, AFD, GIZ, JICA, KfW, EBRD and ADB made presentations on support programs provided by them.
On the last day of the event a site visit was organized for the participants to introduce them two projects of greenhouse gas emission reduction. One of the projects was the District Heating Rehabilitation Project in Avan Residential Area of Yerevan City and the second one was the Lusakert Biogas Plant (LBP), methane capture and combustion from poultry manure treatment CDM project.
During the event the participants had opportunity to exchange their experience on project development, as well as to discuss institutional issues, attraction of financial investments and other related ones. These issues should be considered for targeted use oflong-term financing under the Convention.
