UNDP Armenia initiated an assessment of climate change impact in Shirak marz, that was implemented by “Geofone” NGO. The NGO presented the results at a seminar on “Climate change impact assessment on the economy of Shirak marz of RA” held in Gyumri city’s “Asparez” club on October 4, 2008.
The aim of the report, presented at the seminar, is to study and analyze the climate change impact on the economy of Shirak marz of RA, to assess the residents’ vision of climate change, to raise population’s awareness of climate change impacts and to propose adaptation measures for reduction of negative impacts of climate change on the economy.
In the framework of the report, climate fluctuations and extreme events impact on water resources and various sectors of the economy in 2001-2007 were analyzed for Amasia, Ashock, Artik, Akhuryan and Ani areas of Shirak marz (based on responses of 20 residents and 5 experts in each region).
According to the study results, possible targets of adaptation measures in Shirak marz can be as follows:
• Establish a system for climatic events prediction and for early warning in the marz’s territory,
• Qualitatively improve the antihail system so that consequences of climate change are accounted for,
• Raise farmers’ and other residents’ awareness on climate change and possible adaptation measures.
