Forest Adaptation to CC - International News
In November 1971, at the request of the European Confederation of Agriculture, FAO's member governments supported the annual observance of 21 March as World Forestry Day. Since then many nations have adopted this practice.
WWF has recently published strategic guidelines for developing adaptation strategies for responding to the impacts of climate change on the forests of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The publication has been prepared with the financial support of BMU through KfW.
Three South-Caucasus countries, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and their representatives from the spheres of the academia, civil society, governmental agencies, the business sector as well as international organizations convened in Tbilisi, Georgia between the 10th and 11th of November, 2011 to the VII Annual International Conference of REC Caucasus on “Climate Change Adaptation – Challenge and Opportunity for the Caucasus”.
The International Scientific Conference on “Problems of Adaptation to Climate Change” took place on 7-9 November 2011 in Moscow, Russia. The conference was organized by the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring in cooperation with Russian Academy of Science, WMO, UNESCO, IOC of UNESCO, UNDP, UNEP, and UNFCCC.
Since the UN General Assembly has declared 2011 the International Year of Forests the Ramsar Convention has decided to focus attention of this year’s World Wetlands Day (02.02.2011) on dry forest and forested wetlands - at freshwater swamp forests and forested peat lands. In order to support these activities the Ramsar Convention produced a brochure, posters, and comic strips on Forests for Water and Wetlands theme.

The “Adaptation to Climate Change Impacts in Mountain Forest Ecosystems of Armenia” UNDP/GEF Project results are reported and published in the Report of the 5th meeting of Experts Group on “Biodiversity and Climate Change” of the Convention on the Bern Convention.
The Adaptation Learning Mechanism (ALM) developed a profile about the “Adaptation to Climate Change Impacts in Mountain Forest Ecosystems of Armenia” UNDP/GEF Project, as well as, in cooperation with the project team, produced the “Case Study 2010 - Adaptation to Climate Change Impacts in the Mountain Forest Ecosystems of Armenia”.
2011 is proclaimed by the General Assembly as the International Year of Forests, which creates unique opportunity to increase public awareness of the key role of forests and sustainable forest management in building a greener, more equitable and sustainable future...
