The Opening Ceremony of Lusakert Biogas Plant CDM Project in Armenia
The ceremony of opening of the Lusakert Biogas Plant (LBP) Project took place on
October 24, 2008 at Nor Geghi village located in Kotayk region of the Republic of Armenia. LBP is the second project successfully implemented in Armenia under the Kyoto protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism and the very first industrial biogas plant contracted in the region. Realization of the project became possible due joint efforts made by MAX Group and its international partners Vekst Foundation, Bigadan A/S and IFU as well as because of continuous support provided by the Ministry on Nature Protection of RA (CDM DNA).
The purpose of the project is to mitigate Lusakert Pedigree Poultry Plant's animal effluent related GHG emissions, by improving the farm's Animal Waste Management System practices. The technology implementation is based on the use of anaerobic digester treatment as the first step before a lagoon system. The organic waste form the poultry houses is processed in a 5000 m
3 digester tank where biogas is generated and then supplied to 850 kW gas engine generator for production of electricity and heat. It is expected that the plant will generate annually app. 6000 MWh of electrical and app. 7000 MWh of thermal energy.
